Chapter Five

The grey sky started to darken before we knew it. We sat there as long as we could, watching the clouds above us getting blacker and blacker, knowing another long night of danger lay in wait.

“This place and it’s ridiculous short daylight hours” Zoe spoke with sudden ferocity. “Is a little sunshine so bad? They can still murder us at night, just let us die tanned!”

Dan snorted, not unkindly, next to me.

"Should we move?" I spoke up hesitantly. With the wide stretch of grass all around I was feeling exposed. "Feels like we’re serving ourselves up on a plate.”

"Where are we supposed to go?" Zoe scowled at the trees. "We can't go into the woods again. We're probably better off out here."

Nancy twisted out from under my arm to look around. I let my arm drop back to my side and it felt very uncomfortable. Like it had gotten used to having her in that space. Cold air rushed in where she’d been warm against me.

"I don't like being out here but we don't really have an option.” Nancy looked to the porch again. “Unless we go into the house?"

Zoe tipped her head back and laughed at the grey sky. I snorted and glanced at Dan. To my surprise, Dan wasn’t mocking the suggestion. He was looking at Nancy like he was considering the idea.

“No way” I cut in, before he could say a thing. “I thought that was a joke. That was a joke right? We can’t spend the night in there!”

Nancy shot me an irritated look, but as I tried to come up with a nicer way to repeat myself Dan beat me to an answer.

“It’s not the nicest idea...” his eyes drifted to the two bodies on the porch. Earlier, I’d found the calm, authoritative, steady tone of his voice soothing. Now it was kind of annoying. “But we have three options at the moment; stay on the lawn, head back to the woods, or try the house. We’ve been on this lawn all day and nothing about our situation has changed. We’ve been in the woods and it hasn’t gone well. The house.... It’s a last resort, but it might be the only option.”

Zoe was looking out towards the woods. I followed her line of sight and saw something that sent shivers up my spine- as it got darker, more and more of the figures were gathering up at the tree line, hovering just in the shadows of the trees- a very visible threat.

“They’re waiting” Nancy voiced my thoughts, sounding angry. “They’ve had a bit, and now they want more. Look at them. We’re bloody trapped. We can’t go into the woods, and for all we know the second it’s fully nighttime they’re going to converge on us like sharks on bloody tuna.”

“Sharks?” I raised my eyebrow, grinning a bit. “Tuna? That’s the analogy you want to use here- fish?”

“Shut up” She narrowed her eyes at me, but the corner of her mouth twitched. “Whatever you want to use, lion, mouse, bloody eagle and a rabbit- it’s the same thing.
